One Fine Halloween
Some people love pranks. Other people hate them. When you put these two types of people together, the result will always be mayhem. Which is exactly what happened with Jordan, Sam, Alex, and the rest of their neighborhood.
The trio, to put it mildly, were master pranksters. If there were patron saints of pranking, it would be the three of them. They had been in the business of pranking for quite some time, and had no intention of stopping. The entire neighborhood dreaded their pranks, be it toilet-papering someone’s house, or playing loud music from Sam’s sister’s room to get her into trouble with the neighbors (in fact they played it so loud, that you would have been wondering whether it was loud music or a small earthquake).
Alas, those were the days where the trio were still young and pure. Now, they were battle-hardened pranksters who were bursting with ideas. You see, if you are a person who loves math, sooner or later, you will start learning calculus. If you are a computer whiz, eventually you’ll learn a bit about hacking. Same case with these three. Eventually, they would start moving their pranks to the next level. Which was exactly what happened one fine summer’s day…
Alex had a plan, and when Alex had a plan, it would be for another prank. But this time, it was not just any prank, it was to be his, Sam’s, and Jordan’s biggest yet.
Finally, when the gears in his head had stopped turning, when he had reached a satisfactory result, he got up from his bed, and walked off to Jordan’s house, where Sam was also there. They had been waiting for him. When he told them his plan, they were satisfied, and decided to carry it out.
The next day, the milkman, poor chap, had to face angry calls from everyone in the locality, demanding to know whether he was trying to poison them. Little did anyone know that the mixture in the bottles was in fact the trio’s work – a lovingly crafted cocktail of shampoo (white in color), water, and a dash of sugar. Needless to say, the result was a frothing mouth in every house. Whoever drank it, grabbed the phone, dialled the milkman’s number and yelled their heads off at him. Of course, later on it became clear who was actually behind all of this – the famous trio, of course. Their parents, not knowing what to do, decided to ground them for a month.
The three were really restless. What to do? Of the trio, Alex was the most fidgety. Half the nights, he didn’t sleep, his mind was too focused on the prank ideas. His days were spent in fervent thought: how to get his own back on the neighborhood? The whole month passed, and still he found nothing…
Now, the month was getting over. On the last day, you could practically smell the tension in the air, as the trio waited to get back to normal, and when it ended, it was almost as though the death knell for everyone’s sanity was ringing – they were back, with a vengeance.
However, when they met:
“These pranks are becoming really tiring,” said Sam with a sigh. “We’re becoming predictable too.”
“Come on!” said Alex. “One of us will have a plan, I’m sure… Jordan, any ideas?”
“Nope, you have any,, Sam?”
Sam shook his head.
Alex was the master planner, if he didn’t have anything, then no one would.
“Not sure…. nope, nothing,” he said with a deep sadness in his voice.
They all groaned. Now what? Yet, Alex was busy thinking.
“Aha! Got it!”
“What?” said Jordan excitedly.
“Halloween is coming up….”
There were only a few days left for the trio’s favorite holiday.
“What, toilet papering someone’s house?”
“No.. something better.”
“Like what?” questioned Sam.
“Well… probably just yelling boo or something like that?” said Alex.
“Grow a brain.”
“Then maybe…. yes! I’ve got it! How about we lure people into a haunted house?”
“ Act like one of us is missing, and was last seen near that place…”
Jordan grinned. “Now you’re talking.”
The tension in the area was now visible, the master pranksters meeting could only mean one thing – havoc. However, when nothing happened in the days leading up to Halloween, they all decided to breathe easy. Who knows? Maybe being grounded for a month managed to squish the pranks out of them. Little did they know what was coming.
The trio, meanwhile, were all at work. For their haunted house, they decided to use the old, empty house at the end of the road. Some of the children used to play there, before they began to hear weird, spooky noises coming from the basement, which Jordan would happily have taken credit for. At any rate, no one went there now. “Perfect place for a haunted house,” thought Alex.
The evening before Halloween, the ground floor of the house was now unrecognizable – there was ketchup on the floor- looked disturbingly like blood, skulls hanging from the walls and strewn on the floor, several posters of vampires and ghouls hanging from the walls, and Alex himself dressed up as a mad-axe-man, ready to leap out, brandishing his rubber axe.
The next evening, it was Halloween. The trio were all ready – Jordan and Sam to lure the others in, and Alex ready to leap out of the shadows. Now, all that was left that was to call for help….
“Help! Help! Alex is missing! We last saw him in the old house! Help!” called out Jordan and Sam. Several of the adults and kids rushed to help, running into the old house to check what had happened. All of a sudden, out leapt Alex, brandishing his axe, charging at them. The only thing left to do was run. Alex pursued them out of the house and onto the street before returning. Then, with a sly grin on his face, he strode purposefully back to his house, where he put on his mask, and waited. Sure enough, there came his mother….“Aaargh! Nooo…. wait… Alex!!!! What is this?”
“Wait…Jordan, where is Alex?”
“He went back to his house, didn’t he, Sam?”
Suddenly they both heard shouting: “What nonsense is this!!? You’re grounded!! I’ve had enough of these pranks! “
“I guess he’s there,” said Sam, with a grin.
The three, of course, were again grounded. “But”, thought Jordan, “it was worth it.”
